4 Different Types of IT Services

The importance of robust and well managed IT services has never been more obvious than in recent months. COVID-19 and the burden that remote working conditions have placed on existing IT infrastructures has pushed review of IT services to the top of the agenda within many organisations. Ensuring that existing infrastructure can cope with this – and the range of other challenges that exist today – is essential going forward. With this in mind there are four key IT services areas that most enterprises focus on for review.

1. Security

From ensuring compliance with the GDPR to tackling network vulnerabilities that could leave a business open to hackers, there are many different elements involved in IT services that revolve around security. Primarily, the focus here is on ensuring that the business has adequate protection in place to mitigate the risks that come with being connected online. This could be something as simple as ensuring that there is protection in place against scammers and hackers, staying on top of the latest threats or designing a security strategy that takes into account the specific risks to the business.

2. The business’ network

This is essentially the role of the traditional IT department and revolves around establishing and maintaining the network that an organisation requires in order to function operationally.  Small IT teams often struggle, especially where the need is to set up and run an entire business network, and servers, from scratch. Many different outsourced options exist for this today, including working in collaboration with a small internal IT team that requires some outside support

3. Disaster recovery

Disasters can come in many different formats today, from something as physical as a flood to an intrusion into the business network that blocks access to files and data. IT services that are designed around disaster recovery are intended to ensure that the business can continue to function no matter what occurs. Backup is often an essential part of this – ensuring that risks have been considered and plans put in place so that backup can be accessed as and when required. Recovery plans may be physical or remote – either way it’s essential to ensure that there are contingencies in place. A key part of disaster recovery and backup services will be reviewing these on a regular basis to ensure that they are still current.

4. Training

It’s easy to overlook the importance of staff training when it comes to IT. Investing heavily in new systems and software will have little impact on the overall business if staff aren’t trained in how to use them. Training can also be an essential part of a comprehensive approach to security – a workforce is the first line of defence against breaches and well trained people are not only a system of first alert but are also much less likely to compromise networks with their actions.

These are four of the IT services that any business needs to ensure it is protected and has the resources in place to support growth.
